DESCRIPTION: EPW - Gruen Watch Co, Swiss, Dietrich Gruen with winding indicator, mvt marked "Chronometer Balance," 49mm, 18K gold OF original case bearing French hallmarks, gold cuvette engraved "Presented to William M. Aichelman by 120th. Co. Trans. Corps. 1918-'19," silvered dial with applied gold numerals, SW-SS, fully capped lever escapement, jeweled winding indicator, 23J marked as "23 Rubies," wolf's tooth winding wheels, wheel satin nickel finish, s#42426. Gross weight of assembled watch 47.1 dwt (73.3 g). An elegant top quality presentation watch with interesting military inscription; William Michael Aichelman served as a Corporal and Sargent with the 49th Engineers (120th Transportation Corps) between May 17th, 1918 and June 12th, 1919 per information found on his state of Pennsylvania Veteran's Compensation Application viewable online at www.ancestry.com.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good winding indicator function, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some toning of plate surfaces, scattered fine to micro-fine scratches, regulator spring is broken; excellent dial with some fine scratches and spots within seconds-register, few fine scratches elsewhere, some small surface spots primarily around perimeter areas; excellent hour, minute, and winding indicator hands, fine seconds-hand with areas of finish loss; case shows very little wear, thin gauge cuvette with denting around its perimeter and cuvette will snap closed but nearly always pops back open when outer case rear is closed, rear with ding at left perimeter and at upper-right perimeter, band with dings at 2:30 and 5, scattered nicks elsewhere to band and to bezel, excellent engraving detail, case rear with some play at its hinge; tight replacement bow of somewhat different color, replacement crown is seated somewhat high and shows very little wear; good glass crystal.
